SDAV Group of schools organized a Capacity Building Programme on Value Education by CBSE on 02.1.2020. The resource person for the event was Mr. Pankaj Munjal. He is an alumnus of Delhi College of Engineering (ME) and Institution of Engineers. He switched over to academics after a tenure of around 10 years in service-based industry and 15 years in academics.
Currently, he is doing freelancing assignments related to coaching and facilitating humans (students, teachers and executives) at various platforms: schools, colleges and corporates about living a life of purpose and choice based on Values.
The objective of the workshop was to bring to the fore the formal inculcation of instruction about positive human values (e.g. respect, honesty, compassion, care, humility and responsibility) which would infuse a qualitative improvement of education in our schools and would further lead to a better society. 86 teachers from the SDAV group of schools attended the workshop with an aim to have a better understanding of an education philosophy based on valuing self and others, through the consideration of a values framework or ‘vocabulary’ of principles as the basis of good educational practices.
The workshop commenced at 9:00 a.m. with a welcome of the resource persons, followed by the conventional lamp lighting by Mrs. Asha Sharma, President, SDAV Society. Thereafter, teachers were asked the difference between values and moral values . This insightful activity provided a cheerful initiation to the workshop. Teachers not only explored their knowledge about the contemporary social world- be it, environmental degradation, ill-effects of mass media and so on; but were also able to learn about the importance of their role in shaping the future generations.
Mr. Munjal elucidated five building blocks of values, the first being individual, second family, then community, society and finally the nation; spreading throughout the land and ultimately embracing the planet as a whole. He explained the need of education for values, its aims and challenges before teachers and schools.
The teachers were given handouts to have an in depth knowledge and clarity about the subject. Short films, Power Point presentations, anecdotes and sharing experiences helped the teachers learn better.
The 7 hour long workshop culminated at 4 p.m. with discussion of ways of improving the competence level of the people we are dealing with . His workshop left the teachers with a firm conviction that it is the teachers only who can build good humans .He shared his belief that this initiative of CBSE would definitely enhance teaching competencies of the teachers. They would be able to discern and create a good learning environment, using instructional strategies, exhibiting intellectual integrity, empathy, consideration and be able to monitor and evaluate in a better way.
The teachers were felicitated with the certificates of participation and also served with morning tea, lunch and evening tea during the session.
Ms. Alka Prakash, the Vice Principal of the host school thanked the resource person
